On the morning of August 26th 1915, Squadron Commander Arthur Wellesley Bigsworth was reconnoitering, alone in a biplane, the seaward side of Ostend. Suddenly he saw a German submarine and at once decided to attack it. Swooping down, he checked the speed of his aeroplane and then manoeuvred in circles over the vessel,
